Research & Development

CSP has some of the most robust in-house research and development capabilities in the composites industry.

Our 29,000 square-foot R&D and Prototype Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan, is staffed by a dedicated team of chemists, chemical engineers, polymer engineers, materials scientists and technicians, including a number of Ph.Ds. The facility features expanded capabilities for the continued development of advanced composites, including a prototype SMC line, which has been upgraded to properly handle and introduce carbon fiber. Also in-house is our IATF-16949 certified, world-class polymer analysis laboratory, as well as 500, 200 and 100-ton presses suitable for molding test plaques and parts.

Our 130,000 square-foot facility in Pouance, France, is conducting advanced development projects focused on carbon fiber SMC, pre-preg and RTM processes, as well as recycled and multi-materials approaches.

Additional capabilities include:

  • World‐class polymer development and analysis lab
  • 3-D prototype printing
  • Thermal analysis testing (DSC, DMA, TMA, and TGA)
  • Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
  • Chemical property testing (FTIR/Infrared Spectroscopy and EDS/Energy‐Dispersive X‐ray
    Spectroscopy)
  • Fully‐equipped mechanical and physical property test area
  • Wet lab suitable for polymer synthesis and chemical testing
  • Paint process technology
  • E‐coat oven simulation
